We had dozens of clients, Bob who would just walk in at least a few times/week, another who would bring his family of four all the time, even Aaron who would drop two grand like it was nothing. This doesn't even count the countless stream of monthly regulars (before discount memberships even existed).

Now we've got to deal with this New Economy.
Yes, it's a new economy we're in, not a recession or depression that's going to end. This is the new playground, get used to it. In this new economy the client is KING. They have zero tolerance for anything mediocre. They have all the power... and they know it.

Luxury purchases (us) are OUT (and that's NOT good).
In tough times, people make choices. Cutting out luxury and unnecessary expenses is to be expected. We can (and do) try to reposition ourselves as a "need" instead of a "want" but everyone already sees us differently. So now not only do we have to try to convince our regular clients about the value of what we offer, there's something worse...

Discounting is "in" (unfortunately).
Now enough businesses have began discounting their value by lowering their prices. So now we also have to fight with our fellow businesses (the "discount chains") that try to discriminate themselves by price (making us look all the same... a commodity). As with any commodity such as gas, electricity, etc., the only way to tell them apart IS by price, since they are all the same. Throw into the mix the "daily deal" newspapers and coupon sites like groupon that discount our services even further, and we are in a world of hurt...

Marketing is now REQUIRED more than ever.
WE as salon, day spa & medspa owners now have to deal with something new too... marketing. If we don't treat marketing our business and getting new clients as our NUMBER ONE PRIORITY, we'll soon be out of business. I hear many owners say (in all industries) that they're going to "wait" until things get "better" before marketing again... BIG mistake. Trust me on this one.

What do you do if you're satisfied (but not quite) with your marketing talents?
Most of us are either therapists, stylists or caregivers. Caring for our own clients (therapists), or our staff (managers), or our salon's clients (customer service). Marketing Guru's we're often not. So we trust the sales rep (and they ARE coming out of the woodwork now, aren't they!?).
